Natural; yes. Easy; no. Maybe in concept, but not in application. Trying to find "simplicity" and make it look good is hard to do!

Project 52 - Week 4 - Imperfection

Let me be the first one to admit that I am the more imperfect person I know - bar none.

There is so much about me that just makes me frustrated or sick with myself. So many annoying quirks or sins I keep stumbling over again and again. Some are small inhibitions, but others are debilitating to my relationships and daily life. Either way, sin is sin. And I know what you're thinking - "Not being silly is a sin?!" Certainly not, but for me, I let my self-consciousness get in the way of being silly and having fun with my boys. I end up missing a lot of sweet opportunities to make memories with them because of what boils down to selfishness.

Many people have the misconception that Christians are perfect or think they're perfect - even some Christians believe that, too. It just isn't that way. That is not a practical way to think.

We are sinners by nature; fallen from the womb (Psalm 51:5). There is no self-help book, therapist, or 12-step program in the world that could possibly help us to stop sinning. Nor could any amount of charity, good works, or "Christian duty" save us from condemnation by that sin. Only Jesus' work on the cross. Through Him and and by Him and because of Him I will be seen as perfect when I face a sinless God; earthly flaws and all.

To God be the glory. Please don't stop working on me, Lord.

You Mean The World To Me

As I was preparing to format my SD card, I thought I'd scroll through the images just to make sure I had gotten everything off I wanted. I admit that I passed on this image the first time because I didn't like the way I looked - like it's a big secret that I'm a big girl - gasp! When I saw it the second time, I instantly fell in love with it. I now know why.

Look at the way he looks at me. This man sees beyond my imperfections and flaws and he thinks I'm beautiful even when the world says I'm ugly. He cares for me deeply and does whatever he can to support me and encourage me. He sacrifices his comfort just so my needs are met first. He loves me in a way I will never understand.

Our bond goes beyond marriage. He is my best friend and I can always rely on him to be there for me when I fall. To stand next to me when I'm brave. To be there to make me laugh and smile when things seem dim. He was made just for me.

I love this man and I do not deserve him, but God has blessed me with him anyway and I will be forever grateful.

I have many resolutions this year, but I think the biggest one is to learn how to sew. I watched my grandma and my aunt do all the time when I was growing up, but never got interested in it until now. I'm eager to learn so I can make all that cute crafty junk you see on Pinterest.

What's wrong with me? I'm all "Suzy Homemaker" and stuff, now. Good job, Matt. I think I'm finally domesticated.

We started reading the Christmas Story in the Bible when I asked Matt if it was okay for Rob to open one of his gifts. I let him open his A Faith To Grow On Bible and we read the story of Jesus' birth from there. He was so excited to have his very own Bible and started flipping through it on his own for awhile after we were done. What a blessing!

I've waited for weeks to take these shots. Waiting for the these trees to turn their usual vibrant yellow. Eagerly, with wide angle in hand, I went...and was sadly disappointed. A cold snap had caused the trees begin to dump green leaves instead, so I was left with lack-luster images. Thankfully, editing saved them a bit, but it definitely wasn't the effect I was hoping for. Better luck next year.

I was blessed with the opportunity to do a shoot for another sweet family from our church last week. These guys are such a fun-loving family and the mom has always been a huge support of my photography and in general - I was honored!

It was chilly and a little windy and I was still fighting a cold, but we all survived and had lots good laughs along the way.

There are more, but I'm sworn to secrecy on those until Christmas cards go out.

Patient Appreciation Day Shoot

I had the immense pleasure and opportunity to photograph some very deserving patients of Dr. Barfuss of Summit Dental Care in Twin Falls last week. He held a party, of sorts, celebrating the hard-earned smiles of a few of his patients. Five or six people were invited, but only three showed, but they each had wonderful stories to tell about their journeys to a perfect smile. Each one took their turns with me, and each of them came from different walks of life, but all of them shared the same joy and appreciation for their new-found freedom. Also, each told me they didn't know how to smile, since they had spent a good portion of their lives hiding their smiles from the world.

Congratulations to Patricia, Susie, and Ray! You were great to get to know and your smiles were PERFECT! A huge thank you to Dr. Barfuss, his wonderful staff of ladies, and Corrie, a friend from church who gave me this wonderful opportunity.

For one reason or another, I keep forgetting to post these. I had a shoot about three weeks ago with a very sweet family who had one great-grandma that was visiting from Arkansas and one that was celebrating her 90th birthday.

It was a pretty rushed shoot, as I didn't find out about it until the day of (which also happened to be in the middle of VBS week), but things went well, as far as I know. The shoot was set up by a friend from church (her mixed family).

Found a couple of skeins of Lion Brand Tweed Stripes kicking around a Walmart clearance basket. I was overjoyed! I've been eye-ballin' this stuff for awhile, not but couldn't justify buying it. When I saw the two lonely balls of potential just sitting there, I had to make them mine! These might be destined for a cowl or a scarf. Haven't decided yet. I love the possibilities. =)

By the way, this was my first two attempts at rolling a center-pull ball. I think I did pretty good!

It's the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens and it's on my dream list. I'd like to think that "L" at the end stands for "lots-o-dough", because that's what you'll be shelling out when purchasing any L-series lenses. Yeah, don't ask how much. Let's just say there's a good reason why it's *still* on my dream list.

Coming to Terms with Post-Processing

As you know, I used to have a love/hate relationship with post-processing. I used to think it was just a crutch, or an excuse to be a lazy when taking pictures. But with the help of some very neat Actions - basically a prefigured list of effects that create and overall effect - I've repented of my ways and started taking baby steps out of my comfort zone. I've seen some amazing images enhanced by post-processing - like my friend Jennifer. She does some amazing work, which includes some use of Actions. Why can't I do that, too? In order for my business to survive and to be taken seriously as an artist, I HAVE to come to terms that post-process is "the thing", now. While it starts with a quality image as a foundation, I've realized you can make it true art with some post-processing, but I still stand by my original statement about portraits - I refuse to edit them until the subject looks "plastic". But when it comes to "artsy" shots, I don't mind over processing, as long as it (obviously) improves the shot. Take my recent photos for example. For future reference, SOOC means "straight out of the camera", meaning it hasn't been touched up at all. Click to enlarge:

I loved this shot before, but it definitely needed some...umph. A shove in the right direction, if you will. With some sharpening, color-boost, and a subtle vignette, I think I was able to come away with a lovely, almost impressionistic, image.

I really liked this image to begin with, but I think the muted color mixed with the vibrant red really makes a statement. And I'm a big vignette fan, if you couldn't of told.

I went out on a limb with this one. It went from plain to fantastical in one action. Love it.

I wasn't sure if there was any salvaging this one. It was just kind of...blah. No obvious focus point. Nothing to draw your eye. Nothing exciting. I decided to tinker with it and see if I could do anything with it. Cropping, sharpening, and color-adjustment seemed to do the trick and thus, a whole new image was born. Pretty spiffy, I think.

The verdict: I really love post-processing and I'd love to learn how to do it better. I'm guessing it will just require more of what I have been doing - tinkering and experimenting until I'm satisfied. Just bare with me through that learning. It's purely trial and error.

And to answer any technical questions - I use CS3 and I get my Actions from all over, but the Actions are all freebies I've found here and there. I'm hoping to save up to buy some from Paint The Moon, however.

We decided to go on a little stroll as a family through the College of Southern Idaho's campus. It's so beautiful and the evening was perfect. Yes, I know - most of these are flowers. You know I'm a sucker for 'em! But they fascinate me. God's fingerprints are all over them! :)

Poking around the DIYPhotography site, I came across this fun project. Basically, you take a wine glass (or any glass, I would think) and place it in front of a computer monitor that has a high-contrast desktop wallpaper on it. From there, you shoot the distortions and curves of the glass. Simple, but interesting!

Got a chance to take a photowalk on my own today to test my new lens and battery grip - which is awesome, by the way! I decided to head to the College of Southern Idaho to the Fitness Trail to try to capture the gorgeous snowy, sunny day. It was beautiful, but freezing! I only walked a little before I literally couldn't feel my toes anymore. Anything for a photo, right?

Finally got my wide angle lens (Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM), along with a flash (Canon Speedlite 430EX II) and a battery grip (here) that have been lingering on my wishlist for awhile. LOVE the flash, eager to really test the lens, and still waiting for for the grip. We also got a new computer that can better handle Photoshop. I think we're set for the year!

I had a hard time getting "into" Christmas this year, but now that our halls are decked, I'm starting to get used to the idea. Even a little excited. I watch the boys' wonderment as they gaze upon the twinkling lights and decorations and it sends me back to my childhood, when I shared their wonderment. Few moments in parenthood provide that feeling, so I cherish what I can, when I can.

We're supposed to learn from our mistakes and photography and small business are no different. I wasn't feeling great about my first shoot with the Bisoms a few weeks ago and neither were they, so we went for round two. I'm so grateful that they were willing to give me another chance.

We met up at the Filer Fire Department once more and I have to say that things went immensely better than the first time. And, I'm happy to report, that I survived my first shoot on Manual Mode. I was pretty nervous about it, but I knew I had to throw myself into it. Thank goodness for Photoshop is all I'm sayin'. I still have a lot to learn (oh, how I wish I could take a class!), but I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it each time I go manual. I'm just glad we were able to give them some more images to choose from. I especially loved this one of the boys. They're such a fun trio!

It's not really going so well, considering we JUST finished with Thanksgiving, I fear for our Christmas tree because of the newly-crawling baby, and Christmas music brings back morning sickness flashbacks. We awoke to quite a bit of snow on the ground this morning. I usually don't care for the snow, but it was quite beautiful. Rob didn't really have a chance to play in it last year, as it would slush up and melt fully by the time we got him bundled and out the door. So, we ate quickly and shuffled outside so he could play. Matt pulled him on the sled and then they built a snowman together. Good memories.

Our outing also gave me a chance to practice working in manual; something I've been challenging myself to try. And a challenge it has been. It takes some getting used to, adjusting settings to make sure everything turns out right. Let's just say I took a lot of duds.

I had an opportunity to do a shoot for a wonderful family from our church last weekend. They are so sweet and so patient with my noviceness and I appreciate their willingness to give me a chance time and time again. I don't know if you recognize their boys from our team shoots, but Jennifer (mom) is always passing my name around for family photos and other team shoots. Thanks again, Jen!

Jennifer had approached me about family pictures awhile ago and when she called and scheduled, she said she had a prop/background idea. Since both her and her husband volunteer for the Filer Fire Department, she asked if I'd be willing to include a firetruck. Kudos to them for their creativity, because I would have never thought of that in a million years, oddly enough! Definitely a first for me plus Robby got to not only SEE a firetruck, but he got to RIDE in a firetruck. I think that made his year!

Everything was working against us - weather, lighting, unpredictable kids (redundant?), but somehow we managed. It didn't go exactly as I had hoped, but then again it rarely does. Hopefully they are pleased with what I did come up with.

New Lens in "Sight"

Matt and I have been mulling over what our next purchase will be and I think we've settled on a wide angle lens. After doing the usual homework, I've decided I like the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. But I'm curious - are any of my fellow photog readers familiar with this lens? Have you used it personally? I'd love to know your thoughts on it before shelling out that kind of dough. Either way, it'll be sometime before we're able to buy it, depending on how things go.

I'm like a kid looking through the Toys-R-Us Christmas catalog. Think Santa will bring me one this year? :)

I have had such an itchy shutter finger lately, but haven't been able to come up with any ideas of what to shoot. Here's a fine example of my grasping. My crochet hooks in a jar, post-processed using Photoshop to give it a vintage feel. I like it.

And I know it seems like I'm being hypocritical about post-processing, but really I'm not. When I said that photography should be about reality and not about post-processing, I was mainly referring to portraits, not my art. I'm talking images of people that are Photoshopped to the point where the person is completely unrecognizable anymore. Fake skin, fake backgrounds, and overall fake image - what's the point? Aren't portraits supposed to be about the person and their character, flaws and all? I mean, blemishes are one thing, but who on Earth has a completely perfect, wrinkle/bump/scar-free complexion? You definitely won't find that here. I strive to capture personality, not perfection.

Real life. Not post-processing. That's what photography should be about.

I made this themed afghan for Robby, who's absolutely OBSESSED with Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. It was meant for a Christmas present, but he may end up with it early, since it's getting cold here quickly; especially at night.

This is the first ripple afghan I've ever made and I had a blast making it. Lucky for me, I have two more to finish.

I saw a lot of familiar faces from the t-ball shoot I did earlier this summer, including this charming fellow (a friend of mine's oldest son). I think Matt did a fantastic job on the montages this time! I can't believe he cut out every single player to make each individual's montage. That's dedication.

I can't tell you just how much I still love our supermacro conversion lens. It can be a pain in the tush to get it lined up just right, but when you do manage to get that shot, it can be amazing.

It rained here all day yesterday and continues to rain today. You know I'm a sucker for water drops. They're so beautiful and they looked like diamonds scattered on the fallen leaves. Couldn't pass it up.

Despite the rain, I had another shoot yesterday, too. Another team, but this time it was a group of little flag-footballers. They cracked me up! They take their sport very seriously; for the most part. Matt went along with me this time to help collect order forms and money. I think he got a kick out of them, too. Photos to come.

Finally got some Creations done for Nate's senior shoot. I'm pretty pleased with the results I got. I think I'm improving with every shoot, thankfully. I really branched out and took a chance at some different designs. Hopefully my in-laws will like them, too!

I'm so completely honored to have yet another relation travel from out of state to use to my services. This time it was my brother-in-law, Nathaniel, that flew from Denver, Colorado to have his senior photos done.

We had lots of fun touring Twin Falls, laughing and getting to know each other a little more. He's a good kid with an ornery sense of humor that rivals my own. We got along well.

I made my escape tonight! For awhile, atleast. Had fun just trying to get used to my new Nifty Fifty. It's a learning process trying to figure out how to zoom with your feet and not with your fingers.

Also, I have to admit. I'm now a hypocrite. I used Photoshop to do the editing and I played around with some post-processing actions. I kind of like what I came up with, this one being my favorite.

The Nifty Fifty

If you're a seasoned photographer, you know what I'm talking about. For the rest of us (yes, I'm grouping myself in with you guys because I just recently figured it out for myself), a "Nifty Fifty" refers to a 50mm lens. I read many an article stating that this was standard in any serious photog's bag, so I looked into it more. Let me enlighten you a bit.

Lenses like a 50mm lens fall under the "Prime" or "Fixed" Lens category, meaning that their specific focal lengths are set, or "fixed", and do not move or zoom. Back before digital photography, the only kind of lenses you could use were Prime Lenses. Now, with the popularity of digital photography, we've come accustomed to Zoom Lenses. While Zoom Lenses provide versatility in capturing multiple compositions at various focal lengths quickly, Zoom Lenses lack sharpness, range of depth of field, and good ability to shoot in low-light situations without bumping up the ISO. Less ISO means sharper, less noisy, or grainy, pictures. The f/1.8 max aperture of Canon's EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens (the one I just purchased) allows lots of light to flood into the camera and is perfect for situations in which the lighting is less than ideal, as are most. It's sharpness is tack-sharp and it's knack for detail makes for a fantastic portrait lens. And for $100, the photog on a budget (like myself) can't pass it by!

So, I put my new Nifty Fifty to a small test this morning, as soon as the UPS guy dropped it into my hot little hands. It's, by no means, a quiet lens, but I knew beforehand it wasn't like the more expensive USM version, so I knew it was bound to make some audible motor noise. Also, it's not exactly heavy-duty. I'm fairly certain that besides the glass and metal motor inside, it's mostly plastic. Like 90-95% plastic. You get what you pay for. BUT - doing a few test shots this morning is what sold me on this lens. All these were taken indoor with either light from the window or my kitchen light - both very dim - and straight out of the camera with no editing. You can click on these to enlarge them.

f/4.0 (smaller aperture, resulting in greater depth of field). Great depth and blurred background, pulling the subject right out.

f/1.8 (larger aperture, resulting in smaller depth of field). Only the tiny corner is in focus, with creamy blur in the background. Fantastic!

f/1.8 again. More of that crisp, shallow depth of field matched with the creamy blurred background. Wonderful!

f/5.0. No smiles from this subject today. He's sick. :( Look at the sharpness, though. And the eyes! I definitely see it's portrait potential.

f/5.6. A little happier, healthier participant. Sharp as a tack with beautiful detail in the eyes. Love it!

The bottom line - I'm by no means an expert on these things, but I do like to get the most bang for my buck. Yes, there are far superior 50mm lenses out there that have better builds and are less noisy, but those lenses, such as the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Lens, are way out of my price range. Someday, when I make more income, I will upgrade my lenses, but for now - the original Nifty Fifty is my new best friend. It's sharpness, color, contrast, outstanding performance in low-light, lack of bulk, and it's $100 price tag make it a welcome addition to my camera bag.

I hope to escape later to do some more shooting with this lens, but I do have a senior shoot tomorrow that may be my Nifty Fifty's maiden voyage. Hopefully it doesn't share the Titanic's fate and sink beneath me.

I took this during my step-mom's visit on her last evening here. It was bittersweet. The evening was gorgeous and unusually warm, so we sat outside and watched the boys play. I captured this darling shot of Drew - perfect for his six-month milestone today. Too bad we had to return Grandma back to the airport to go home today, too. =(

Our son picked up a tiny, random twig while playing outside one day. He snapped it in two, studied it for a moment, and then proclaimed, "Star!" Surprisingly, he was right!

God's fingerprints are everywhere - even hidden in a random two-inch twig. Amazing.

I had the honor and privilege to do my "baby" cousin's senior photos today. Why such an honor? She not only waited until after she graduated to get her photos done, but she also came all the way from Kansas to Idaho just so I could do them. How humbling and flattering!

Emily is so very photogenic, so I had no worries that she would photograph well. She's so natural and relaxed with her poses and is very open and flexible to any ideas you throw at her. She is one fantastic kid and I had an absolute blast with her today, laughing and tossing around ideas, as we toured the whole city of Twin Falls (a whole five miles wide) to do her shoot. We settled on two locations - Downtown and Rock Creek Park. I am very pleased with our results and the important thing is that she is too. When I showed them to her mom, she cried. Thankfully, in a good way! I offered her a total of 25 proofs and she had a hard time narrowing it down to just 20. What a compliment! Praise be to God and God only for this undeserved gift He has blessed me with!

Robby and I headed outside to blow some bubbles, but Daddy soon followed. I grabbed the camera to see what I could capture. This one was kind of fun. I love the shape of the bubbles as they're being blown.

I love to crochet. Not as much as I love doing photography, but it's definitely up there. I love it because my fried, exhausted little brain doesn't have to think about anything while I'm doing it. I can just sit down, relax, and zone out. Those moments are few and far between around here.

I'm currently working on bag/tote made up of these squares. Depending on how it turns out, I'm either going to sell it or keep it. Either way, I'll make sure to shoot the end result. If it ever gets finished.
